Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Within the federal government, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is responsible for Germany’s development policy. We focus on our commitment to reduce poverty and hunger and to healthy people in a healthy environment. The BMZ sees itself as a ‘transformation ministry’ that promotes the global transformation towards a sustainable, climate- and nature-friendly economy, while strengthening peace, freedom and human rights.

In doing so, the BMZ is increasingly using digital technologies - from health chatbots in Rwanda to e-government apps in Egypt. We also want people from developing countries to be able to play an even greater role in shaping the digital transformation worldwide. To this end, we have launched the [digital.global] network, which brings together representatives of business, civil society and politics.

The BMZ employs around 1,230 people at its two headquarters in Bonn and Berlin. Some of the BMZ staff also work for German development policy worldwide, at German missions abroad or at international organisations.
